Lawrence Application Process

Match Corps: Boston is our original, flagship tutoring program. Please note that the application process for Match Corps: Boston is distinct from the process for Match Corps: Lawrence; candidates should only apply to one of the two programs.

There are three steps* in our application process:

  1. Submit resume and cover letter
  2. Online math assessment
  3. On-site sample tutorial

*Note: Applicants who ranked their Spanish communication level as"proficient" or "fluent" will have an additional 5 minute interview to test their proficiency.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until all 50 fellows are hired. In considering applications, we primarily look for a strong academic record, coaching or tutoring experience, and a readiness to rise to the many demands and challenges that come with working with at-risk youth. We need idealistic and driven people who are hungry for consistent feedback. We need anyone who will commit to work tirelessly for one year to erase, not narrow, the achievement gap.

Who should apply to Match Corps: Lawrence

Everyone who applies must have a bachelor's degree, but we accept applicants from all majors. Although Fellows are required to have strong math skills, this opportunity is open to any adult who can commit to a full-time 11 month fellowship. Successful applicants will include recent college graduates, mid-career individuals, and retirees. Spanish proficiency is highly valued, but not required.

Online Math Assessment

Applicants are required to take a math aptitude test. The test will include 20 multiple-choice and open-response questions intended to assess 9th and 10th grade-level skills in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry. Applicants will have 60 minutes to complete the test and must receive a score of 70% or higher to pass.

On-site Sample Tutorial

Applicants who pass the math assessment will be required to deliver a sample tutorial to two students at Lawrence High School. Each applicant will receive a lesson plan a day in advance to prepare for the tutorial. During the tutorial, there will be an observer taking notes. After the tutorial, candidates will sit down with the observer to debrief and receive feedback.

We highly recommend that you come to our location for the sample tutorial; however, if you absolutely can not make it to our site, we can host the tutorial session through Skype (Note: this will affect the quality of the session and our ability to evaluate your performance). Also, you will lose the opportunity to view the school and observe our program in action.
